DESIGN - LED BUSINESS STRATEGY

From January to July 2021, I worked as a design intern at Core Experience, where I led the design and development of six unique home appliances for Svasa Homes' luxury residences. The project aimed to elevate the interior experience of high-end apartments through thoughtfully integrated product design. Acting as the lead designer, I worked primarily independently, while regularly collaborating with a multidisciplinary team of designers, architects, and engineers for feedback and alignment. The project also explored emerging directions in the Indian luxury market, with design as its central driver.

Problem

It's hard to sell luxury homes with poorly designed, run of the mill appliances populating them.

The process

A lot of work went into figuring out which household appliances cause the biggest disturbances and what the consequences of changing their user experience and aesthetics might look like. This laid a fantastic groundwork for us to work on and had a massive impact on the overall process going forward.

We also mapped the typical home interior and the market to find intervention points and choose which products to take forward.

Power backup solutions

We hid the inverter, otherwise an ugly home appliance, in plain sight by giving it a new persona. It doubles as an entrance console, a piece of furniture designed to house all your day-to-day essentials. It stands by near your home entrance to give you one simple solution to store your everyday carry and keep your secondary devices charged.

We hid the UPS, otherwise an appliance with no aesthetic quality, by putting it centre-stage. It adorns a user-customizable LED matrix screen in the front and becomes a great accessory to the user.

Water heaters

We hid the bathroom water heater by concealing it as artwork for your bathroom. It completely changes it’s persona from boring, utilitarian appliance to contemporary, modern art.

The kitchen water heater conceals itself behind a gently curved panel of plastic. It aims to disappear in plain sight by attracting the least amount of attention possible to the fact that it’s a water heater.

Dustbins

The play dustbin is aimed at environments that are primarily meant for kids. Therefore, it conceals itself by vaguely resembling a cartoon character with bright colored accents. It perfectly blends into any colorful environment its placed in.

The sphere dustbin is primarily aimed at living spaces where the overall aesthetic matters a lot to people. It disguises the fact that it’s a dustbin by taking a very unconventional form to look more like a piece of  technology / furniture to blend into spaces where people hang out and take time off.
